Poplar Tree Removal, Lancaster, North Lancashire

Removing Previously Topped Poplar Trees

R Watson Tree Surgery was instructed to remove several mature poplar trees at a property in Lancaster, North Lancashire.

The trees had been heavily topped many years earlier. Although topping was once a common method of controlling the size of fast-growing trees, it is now widely recognised as a poor long-term management technique.

Why Were the Trees Removed?

Poplars are vigorous, fast-growing trees that respond to topping by producing large numbers of new shoots from the cut points.

Over time, these shoots can become tall and heavy while remaining attached to the original pruning wounds. As the trees continue to grow, this often creates a cycle of repeated heavy pruning and increasing management costs.

In this case, the trees had reached the point where removal was considered the most appropriate long-term solution.

Safe and Controlled Tree Removal

Each tree was dismantled in carefully managed sections before the timber was processed on the ground.

Removing multiple mature poplars requires careful planning due to their height, rapid growth and the large volume of timber produced. By working methodically, each tree was removed safely while protecting the surrounding property and garden.

Looking After Trees for the Future

Where possible, trees should be managed with sympathetic pruning throughout their lives rather than repeated topping.

Appropriate crown reductions carried out at suitable intervals help retain a tree’s natural form, reduce structural defects and often extend its useful life while avoiding the problems associated with severe topping.
