Professional tree pruning & reduction by qualified, experienced, insured, Arborists

Healthy, well-maintained trees are safer, more attractive and often live considerably longer than those left unmanaged. At R Watson Tree Surgery, we provide professional tree pruning throughout Lancaster, Morecambe, Carnforth, Garstang, Kirkby Lonsdale and the surrounding areas. Whether you’re looking to reduce the size of a mature tree, remove dangerous branches or improve the appearance of your garden, we carry out every job to recognised arboricultural standards with the long-term health of the tree in mind. We believe good pruning should leave a tree looking natural—not hacked back or over-pruned.

When should a tree be pruned? There are many reasons why pruning may be the best solution without removing the tree altogether. Common reasons include:

  • Reducing the size of an overgrown tree

  • Improving clearance over roads, footpaths and driveways

  • Preventing branches from contacting buildings

  • Removing dead, damaged or dangerous limbs

  • Allowing more natural light into gardens

  • Improving the tree’s shape and appearance

  • Managing growth while retaining the tree

  • Removing storm-damaged branches

Every tree is different, and we’ll always recommend the most appropriate level of pruning rather than carrying out unnecessary work.

Crown Reduction reduces the overall size of the tree while maintaining its natural shape. Rather than simply shortening branches indiscriminately, we selectively reduce the canopy to suitable growth points, creating a balanced crown that remains healthy and attractive. A well-executed crown reduction can:

  • Reduce end weight on heavy limbs

  • Lower the risk of branch failure

  • Increase clearance from buildings

  • Improve light levels

  • Retain the character and beauty of the tree
    .

Crown Thinning involves removing selected secondary branches throughout the canopy without significantly changing the tree’s size or overall shape. This allows more light and air to pass through the crown while reducing wind resistance. Crown thinning is often suitable where a tree feels overly dense but doesn’t require reducing in height.

Crown Lifting removes the lower branches of a tree to increase clearance beneath the canopy. This is commonly carried out to provide access for vehicles, improve visibility, create pedestrian clearance or prevent branches interfering with buildings and fences. Where possible, we retain sufficient lower growth to preserve the tree’s natural appearance and long-term health.

Deadwood Removal can become hazardous as they decay and eventually fall. Removing deadwood improves safety while also enhancing the tree’s appearance. This is particularly important over gardens, roads, driveways, public spaces and buildings. Deadwood removal is often all that’s required to make an otherwise healthy mature tree safe.

Pruning with the Tree in Mind. Trees don’t always benefit from heavy pruning. As qualified arborists, our priority is the long-term health of every tree we work on. We’ll always explain the options available and recommend the least invasive solution wherever possible. Sometimes a light prune is all that’s needed. In other cases, crown reduction or even removal may be the safest course of action. You’ll always receive honest advice based on the condition of the tree—not on selling the biggest job.
