R Watson Tree Surgery was instructed to carry out a substantial crown reduction on a mature oak tree at Caton Hall, Caton, North Lancashire.
The tree occupied a prominent position overlooking the A6, a nearby stream and the historic Caton Oak, meaning careful planning was required throughout the project.
Assessing the Tree’s Condition
Before work began, the oak was inspected and found to be in significant decline.
Large amounts of deadwood were present throughout the canopy, increasing the risk of falling branches. Although the tree remained an important feature of the landscape, its deteriorating condition meant action was required to help reduce the risk while retaining the tree for as long as possible.
Careful Crown Reduction
The objective of the work was to reduce the overall size and weight of the crown while maintaining the tree’s natural shape.
By selectively shortening the canopy and removing significant deadwood, the loading on the main scaffold limbs was reduced and the crown was carefully reshaped and balanced. This approach helps lessen the likelihood of branch failure while preserving the character of the tree.
Working above the A6 and adjacent to a watercourse required careful planning throughout the operation to ensure the work was completed safely and efficiently.
Ongoing Tree Management
As this oak is showing signs of decline, the reduction should be viewed as part of its ongoing management rather than a permanent solution.
The tree’s condition will need to be reassessed in the near future to monitor its health and determine whether any further management, additional pruning or eventual removal becomes necessary.
